Accommodations Related to Employee’s Disability

UChicago Medicine is dedicated to helping employees perform their job with or without accommodation.A reasonable adjustment to job duties or work environment to enable an employee to perform the essential parts of his/her job without causing undue hardship Every request will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

When a disabled or medically restricted employee seeks an accommodation from UChicago Medicine, managers may need to deviate from existing policies or rules that apply to all employees, including modifying job duties or rules for union and non-union employees. All requests are up to the discretion of the Leave Administration, Absence Management and Accommodations Department, working in conjunction with the department, and will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Most accommodation requests are made directly to managers and are granted without involvement from the Accommodations Office. When an employee requests an accommodation related to their own disability, consider the following:

  • What are the essential parts of the job for the employee?
  • Is there a way to modify the job while approving the request for accommodation? (For example, can the duties of the job be handled in a way where the employee does some parts of the job and co-workers do other parts of the job?)
  • What, if any, hardships will the department and UChicago Medicine face by granting this accommodation?
    • Are these hardships financial or connected to safety and/or patient care?
    • Are there ways to mitigate the hardship?
  • If you are considering approval, is there an end date within the next few months?

If you are considering denying the request or wish to discuss the case, please contact Feroze Khan (773-834-2167 or Feroze.Khan@uchospitals.edu).
